The jurisdiction process
- Gather the death certificate, the will if one exists, asset information, debts, addresses for heirs and beneficiaries, and any real estate documents tied to Ness County.

- Attend the hearing or appear as allowed. The court, not the clerk, admits the will and grants letters testamentary under K.S.A. 59-701 or letters of administration under K.S.A. 59-705.
- Administer the estate after appointment. File the inventory and valuation within 30 days after letters are granted unless the court allows more time under K.S.A. 59-1201, collect assets, handle claims, pay debts and taxes, and keep records for final settlement.
- Close through the court when the estate is ready. The personal representative petitions for final settlement, and the court enters a final decree assigning the estate under K.S.A. 59-2247 and K.S.A. 59-2249.
