Before you begin — know the assets and liabilities
Before you file anything with the Trumbull Probate Court, make a practical list of what the person owned, what was jointly held, what had beneficiary designations, what debts are known, and whether there is any Connecticut real estate. That asset picture determines whether estate settlement can stay simple, whether full administration is needed, and what must be reported to the Probate Court.
Sunset can help families search for accounts across 2,300 institutions, organize balances and ownership details, and turn that information into the probate packet for the court that serves Easton, Monroe or Trumbull.
Which court handles jurisdiction
Connecticut probate is handled by a separate statewide system of 54 Probate Courts, one for each probate district, not by the Superior Court and not by any county. The Trumbull Probate Court serves Easton, Monroe and Trumbull (C.G.S. section 45a-2). The courthouse is in Trumbull Town Hall, so Easton and Monroe residents should not file in another town just because the court name does not include their town.
If the decedent was domiciled in Easton, Monroe or Trumbull and left a will, the executor applies to the Probate Court for the district where the testator was domiciled at death (C.G.S. section 45a-283). If the decedent died intestate, the Probate Court for the district where the person was domiciled has jurisdiction to grant letters of administration (C.G.S. section 45a-303). For a nonresident decedent who owned Connecticut property, C.G.S. section 45a-287 supplies the Connecticut venue choices. A decision of the Probate Court may be appealed to the Superior Court, generally within thirty days (C.G.S. section 45a-186).
If the town you need is not Easton, Monroe or Trumbull, use the statewide Court Locator at ctprobate.gov/court-locator to find the correct Connecticut Probate Court.
The jurisdiction process
- Choose the right filing path. For a full estate, start with PC-200, Petition/Administration or Probate of Will, filed in the district where the decedent was domiciled (C.G.S. section 45a-283). If there is no will, the intestate estate proceeds under the district rule in C.G.S. section 45a-303. If the decedent was not a Connecticut resident but owned Connecticut property, review the nonresident venue rule in C.G.S. section 45a-287.
- Prepare the Connecticut forms. Use the statewide PC forms from ctprobate.gov. The Trumbull Probate Court does not publish its own probate packet. A typical full estate later uses PC-2407 for the inventory under C.G.S. section 45a-341, PC-237 for the return of claims under C.G.S. section 45a-361, PC-246 for the financial report under Probate Court Rules of Procedure, section 30.19, and PC-213 for the affidavit of closing under section 36.12.
- File with the Trumbull Probate Court. File at Town Hall, 5866 Main Street, Trumbull, CT 06611, by mail, in person during published hours, or through the statewide eFiling system if you are eligible. Attorneys who appear in a probate matter must register for eFiling under Probate Court Rules of Procedure, section 22.1. Registration is optional for self-represented parties. The original will cannot be eFiled and must reach the court on paper under section 7.1a.
- Expect the fee to be billed later. Connecticut does not charge a filing fee to open a decedent's estate. Under section 6.1 of the Probate Court Rules of Procedure, the statutory filing fee is due at filing in every kind of Probate Court matter except a decedent's estate and an accounting. Instead, the Trumbull Probate Court bills the estate later. The fee is set by statute and is the same in all 54 Connecticut probate districts (C.G.S. section 45a-105). For a person who died on or after July 1, 2016, it is graduated on the greater of the inventory, the gross estate or the Connecticut taxable estate, running from $25 up to a cap of $40,000, with a minimum of $150 where a full estate is opened on a basis under $10,000, and with any portion passing to a surviving spouse counted at half (C.G.S. section 45a-107). The fee is owed on everything the decedent owned, including assets that pass outside probate, and it is owed whether or not an estate is opened at all. Interest of 0.5 per cent per month runs on a probate fee that is unpaid thirty days after the court's invoice, and separately on the fee of an estate whose Connecticut estate tax return is filed late (C.G.S. section 45a-107). ctprobate.gov publishes a fee calculator at ctprobate.gov/fees-expenses-calculators.
- Handle notice and hearing steps. The court gives notice of the petition or uses written waivers or the streamline notice procedure under Probate Court Rules of Procedure, section 8.6. After appointment, the court places the newspaper notice to creditors within fourteen days under C.G.S. section 45a-354. Creditors generally have 150 days to present claims under C.G.S. section 45a-356, and the fiduciary files PC-237 after that claims period under C.G.S. section 45a-361.
- Ask early if someone needs to participate by electronic means. Connecticut Probate Courts may allow a party, witness or attorney to take part in a hearing, conference or deposition by electronic means. Section 66.1 of the Probate Court Rules of Procedure lets the court permit it on request or on its own motion, weighing factors that include the nature of the proceeding, the technology available, and whether remote participation would still allow full examination of witnesses. It is a request the court decides, not a right, and the rule names no platform. Ask the clerk of the Trumbull Probate Court what that court expects.
- Get the fiduciary authority document. When the Probate Court appoints you, the court's clerk issues a certificate of your appointment as fiduciary. Under C.G.S. section 45a-200 that certificate is sufficient evidence of your authority and identity for one year from the date it is issued, so a bank or transfer agent may ask for a recently issued copy. Ask the clerk of the Trumbull Probate Court for as many certified copies as you expect to need, and expect to request fresh ones if the estate stays open past a year.
- Administer, report and close the estate. Take control of probate assets, file the inventory within the time allowed by C.G.S. section 45a-341, file the Connecticut estate tax return with the Probate Court within six months, resolve claims and taxes, file the financial report or account, distribute under the court's decree, and complete any affidavit of closing the court directs.

Scenarios
| Scenario | Path at the Trumbull Probate Court | Where Sunset helps |
|---|---|---|
| surviving spouse w/ co-owned home | If the decedent was domiciled in Easton, Monroe or Trumbull, the petition goes to the Trumbull Probate Court (C.G.S. section 45a-283). A co-owned home may pass outside probate by survivorship, but the Connecticut estate tax return is still filed with the Probate Court within six months, and the probate fee is computed from that return under C.G.S. section 45a-107. | Sunset helps identify jointly held accounts, beneficiary assets and probate assets so the spouse can see what belongs in the court file and what belongs only on the tax return. |
| out-of-state adult child w/ small estate | The small estate path is a court filing under C.G.S. section 45a-273, not an out-of-court bank form. Papers may be mailed to Town Hall, 5866 Main Street, Trumbull, CT 06611. The original will cannot be eFiled and must arrive on paper under section 7.1a. If an out-of-state adult child is appointed fiduciary, PC-482 may be part of the appointment paperwork. | Sunset helps the child collect account information, generate the Connecticut forms, and decide whether a local probate attorney should review the filing before it goes to Trumbull. |
| parent settling predeceased child's estate, home must be sold | A sale of Connecticut real property usually means full administration through PC-200 in the proper probate district (C.G.S. section 45a-2, C.G.S. section 45a-283). After appointment, the certificate of appointment under C.G.S. section 45a-200 is the authority document a buyer's attorney or title company will expect. If someone objects, the matter stays in the Probate Court, with an appeal to the Superior Court generally within thirty days under C.G.S. section 45a-186. | Sunset helps organize assets, debts, title-related documents and court forms so the parent and attorney can move the estate settlement toward sale and closing. |
