Before you begin — know the assets and liabilities
Before filing anything with the Simsbury Regional Probate Court, list the assets, debts, real property, joint accounts, beneficiary designations and possible tax filings. Which court handles jurisdiction
Connecticut probate is handled by a separate statewide system of 54 Probate Courts, one for each probate district, not by the Superior Court and not by any county. The Simsbury Regional Probate Court serves Avon, Canton, Granby and Simsbury (C.G.S. section 45a-2). If the decedent was domiciled in one of those towns at death, that is where the estate is filed (C.G.S. section 45a-283, C.G.S. section 45a-303). For a Connecticut-domiciled decedent who left a will, the named executor applies for probate of the will in the Probate Court of the district where the testator was domiciled at death (C.G.S. section 45a-283). For a Connecticut-domiciled decedent who left no will, the court of the district where the deceased was domiciled at death has jurisdiction to grant letters of administration (C.G.S. section 45a-303). For a nonresident who owned Connecticut property, C.G.S. section 45a-287 gives five alternative districts, and the court that first assumes jurisdiction keeps it.

The jurisdiction process
- Confirm the correct court. File in the Simsbury Regional Probate Court if the decedent was domiciled in Avon, Canton, Granby or Simsbury (C.G.S. section 45a-283, C.G.S. section 45a-303). Use the Court Locator at ctprobate.gov/court-locator if the town is different.
- Choose the opening form. A full Connecticut estate generally starts with PC-200, Petition/Administration or Probate of Will, filed in the domicile district under C.G.S. section 45a-283. If the matter qualifies for Connecticut's affidavit in lieu procedure, use PC-212 under C.G.S. section 45a-273.
- File with the court. Papers may be mailed or delivered to 933 Hopmeadow Street, Simsbury, CT 06070. The statewide eFiling system is governed by Probate Court Rules of Procedure, section 22.1, but the original will can never be eFiled and must reach the court on paper under section 7.1a.
- Expect the fee to be billed later. No filing fee is due when a decedent's estate is opened. The Probate Court invoices a statutory fee later, computed on the value of the estate under C.G.S. section 45a-107.
- Address notice and hearing. The court sends required notices. After appointment, the court places the newspaper notice to creditors under C.G.S. section 45a-354. If everyone entitled to notice waives a hearing, or if the court uses the streamline notice procedure under Probate Court Rules of Procedure, section 8.6 and no hearing is requested, a decree may issue without a formal appearance.
- Ask early about participation by electronic means. Connecticut Probate Courts may allow a party, witness or attorney to take part in a hearing, conference or deposition by electronic means. Section 66.1 of the Probate Court Rules of Procedure lets the court permit it on request or on its own motion, weighing factors that include the nature of the proceeding, the technology available, and whether remote participation would still allow full examination of witnesses. It is a request the court decides, not a right, and the rule names no platform. Ask the clerk of the Simsbury Regional Probate Court what that court expects.
- Receive authority from the clerk. When the Probate Court appoints you, the court's clerk issues a certificate of your appointment as fiduciary. Under C.G.S. section 45a-200 that certificate is sufficient evidence of your authority and identity for one year from the date it is issued, so a bank or transfer agent may ask for a recently issued copy.
- Administer and close the estate. File the decedent's estate inventory, PC-2407, within two months after qualification unless the court extends the deadline for cause under C.G.S. section 45a-341. Handle creditor claims under C.G.S. section 45a-354 and C.G.S. section 45a-356, file PC-237 return of claims under C.G.S. section 45a-361, file the Connecticut estate tax return within six months, and close with the financial report PC-246 under Probate Court Rules of Procedure, section 30.19, or another closing document the court requires.
