Before you begin — know the assets and liabilities
Start by identifying what the person owned and owed before choosing a filing path. In Connecticut, this matters for estate settlement because the probate fee is computed later on the value of the estate under C.G.S. section 45a-107, and a Connecticut estate tax return is due to the Probate Court within six months of death whether or not a full estate is opened.
Sunset searches more than 2,300 institutions to help families find accounts, insurance, investments and other assets before the first filing. For Danbury, that can also save a second trip or mailing because the counter is open only Monday through Thursday and the original will has to reach the court on paper.
Which court handles jurisdiction
Connecticut probate is handled by a separate statewide system of 54 Probate Courts, one for each district, not by the Superior Court and not by any county. The Danbury Probate Court serves the town of Danbury, and only Danbury (C.G.S. section 45a-2).
If the decedent was domiciled in Danbury at death, this is the court for probate of a will (C.G.S. section 45a-283) or for an estate with no will, where the court may grant letters of administration (C.G.S. section 45a-303). For a nonresident decedent with Connecticut property, C.G.S. section 45a-287 supplies the Connecticut venue choices.
The local trap is the greater Danbury area. Bethel, Newtown, Redding and Ridgefield are served by the Northern Fairfield County Probate Court. Bridgewater, Brookfield, New Fairfield, New Milford and Sherman are served by the Housatonic Probate Court. Use the statewide Court Locator at ctprobate.gov/court-locator before mailing a petition or an original will.
The jurisdiction process
- List the assets, debts and nonprobate transfers first. The Connecticut estate tax return is due within six months of death, and the probate fee is later computed under C.G.S. section 45a-107 from estate values rather than paid at the counter.
- Get the Connecticut forms. The opening petition is PC-200 for administration or probate of will, filed in the district where the decedent was domiciled at death (C.G.S. section 45a-283). If the estate fits Connecticut's affidavit in lieu procedure, use PC-212 with C.G.S. section 45a-273.
- Confirm the correct court by town. The Danbury Probate Court serves Danbury only (C.G.S. section 45a-2). If the decedent lived in a nearby town, check the Court Locator at ctprobate.gov/court-locator before filing.
- File with the Danbury Probate Court at the City Hall Building, 155 Deer Hill Avenue, Danbury, CT 06810, by mail or in person. There is no P.O. box. If you deliver papers in person, go Monday through Thursday because the office is closed Friday.
- Send the original will on paper. Connecticut eFiling is statewide, attorneys must register and others may register, but the original will cannot be eFiled (Probate Court Rules of Procedure, sections 22.1 and 7.1a).
- Do not bring a counter payment for a decedent's estate. No filing fee is due when a decedent's estate is opened. The Probate Court invoices a statutory fee later, computed on the value of the estate under C.G.S. section 45a-107.
- Watch for notice and any hearing instructions. Connecticut procedures allow written waivers and a streamline notice procedure under Probate Court Rules of Procedure, section 8.6, so some matters can be decided without everyone appearing.
- If the court appoints you as executor or administrator, ask the clerk for certified copies of the certificate of appointment. Under C.G.S. section 45a-200, the certificate is sufficient evidence of your authority and identity for one year from the date issued.
- Administer the estate on the statewide clocks. The decedent's estate inventory, including PC-2407 when used, is due within two months after qualification unless the court extends the time under C.G.S. section 45a-341. The court places the newspaper notice to creditors under C.G.S. section 45a-354, and the return of claims follows under C.G.S. section 45a-361.
- Close with the required financial report or account. PC-246 is the financial report for a decedent's estate under Probate Court Rules of Procedure, section 30.19, and the court issues any required decree before final distribution and closing.
Forms and documents
Probate forms at the Danbury Probate Court
Connecticut probate forms are statewide. The Danbury Probate Court uses the same numbered PC forms as every other Connecticut Probate Court, published free by the Office of the Probate Court Administrator at ctprobate.gov. The court does not publish forms of its own.
| Form | Use |
|---|---|
| PC-200 | Petition to open administration or probate a will in the district where the decedent was domiciled at death (C.G.S. section 45a-283). |
| PC-200CI | Confidential information filed with PC-200. |
| PC-212 | Affidavit in lieu of probate of will or administration under C.G.S. section 45a-273. |
| PC-2407 | Inventory for decedents' estates, tied to the inventory deadline in C.G.S. section 45a-341. |
| PC-237 | Return of claims and list of notified creditors after the claims period, under C.G.S. section 45a-361. |
| PC-246 | Financial report for a decedent's estate under Probate Court Rules of Procedure, section 30.19. |
The original will cannot be eFiled and must reach the court on paper (Probate Court Rules of Procedure, section 7.1a). If the decedent owned real estate in Danbury or another Connecticut town, ask the court for the land records notice form and record it with the town clerk, not with the Probate Court.
Local nuance
Danbury Probate Court district-specific considerations
| Local point | What to do |
|---|---|
| Four-day week | The court is open Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and closed Friday. Plan hand delivery of an original will, requests for certified copies and counter questions for one of the four open days. |
| One-town district in a regional hub | The Danbury Probate Court serves Danbury only (C.G.S. section 45a-2). Nearby towns use other Probate Courts, so check the Court Locator at ctprobate.gov/court-locator if the decedent lived near Danbury but not in Danbury. |
| City Hall, not the courthouse | The Probate Court is in the City Hall Building at 155 Deer Hill Avenue. The Danbury Courthouse on White Street is the Superior Court building and is a different place. |

Scenarios
| Situation | Local path | Where Sunset helps |
|---|---|---|
| Surviving spouse with a co-owned Danbury home | If the decedent was domiciled in Danbury, any needed estate filing belongs at the Danbury Probate Court (C.G.S. section 45a-283). A co-owned home may pass outside probate by survivorship, but the Connecticut estate tax return is still due within six months, and the probate fee is computed under C.G.S. section 45a-107 whether or not a full estate is opened. | Sunset helps find financial accounts and property information so the spouse can understand whether estate settlement needs a court filing and what must be reported. |
| Out-of-state adult child with a small estate | Mail can go to the Danbury Probate Court at 155 Deer Hill Avenue, Danbury, CT 06810. If Connecticut's small estate path applies, the affidavit in lieu form is PC-212 and must be tied to C.G.S. section 45a-273. The original will still has to arrive on paper, and any trip should be planned for Monday through Thursday. | Sunset helps organize the asset list, generate the probate packet and flag when an out-of-state fiduciary may need an additional Connecticut form. |
| Parent settling a predeceased child's estate when a home must be sold | A solely owned Danbury home usually means full administration through PC-200 in the decedent's domicile district (C.G.S. section 45a-283). After appointment, the clerk's certificate of appointment is the authority document for the fiduciary, and it is good for one year under C.G.S. section 45a-200. If a dispute arises, the matter stays in Probate Court, with appeal to the Superior Court generally within thirty days under C.G.S. section 45a-186. | Sunset helps prepare the filing information and connects the family with a local probate attorney when a sale, title company or contested decree makes counsel important. |

When to hire an attorney
The Connecticut Probate Court system says estate matters can be complex and that the advice of a lawyer is strongly recommended, while the 2026 decedents' estates guide says a lawyer is not required but often advisable. Counsel is especially useful when Danbury real property must be sold, the fiduciary lives outside Connecticut, the family disagrees, the estate tax return due within six months is uncertain, or a decree may be appealed to the Superior Court under C.G.S. section 45a-186. Sunset connects you to a vetted probate attorney.
How Sunset helps
Find the accounts and assets. Sunset helps families locate bank accounts, investments, insurance and other assets that are easy to miss during estate settlement. That is especially important in Connecticut because the probate fee is based on estate value under C.G.S. section 45a-107, not a counter payment.
Generate the probate packet. Sunset turns the information you gather into an organized probate packet for the Danbury Probate Court, including the right statewide form set and a checklist for what must be mailed or delivered on paper.
Find a local probate attorney. When the estate involves a home sale, an out-of-state fiduciary, a dispute or a possible appeal under C.G.S. section 45a-186, Sunset can connect the family with a vetted Connecticut probate attorney.
Sunset is free for families. Families can use Sunset to organize the estate, understand the next step and move through estate settlement without paying Sunset.
Frequently asked questions

The Danbury Probate Court serves the town of Danbury only (C.G.S. section 45a-2). It is PD-43 in the statewide Probate Court system.
I live near Danbury but not in Danbury. Is this my court?
Not if the decedent was domiciled in another town. Bethel, Newtown, Redding and Ridgefield use the Northern Fairfield County Probate Court. Bridgewater, Brookfield, New Fairfield, New Milford and Sherman use the Housatonic Probate Court. Check the Court Locator at ctprobate.gov/court-locator before sending papers.
Is the Danbury Probate Court open on Fridays?
No. The court is open Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., eastern time, and is closed Friday.
Where is the Danbury Probate Court?
It is in the City Hall Building at 155 Deer Hill Avenue, Danbury, CT 06810. It is not at the Danbury Courthouse on White Street, which is the Superior Court building.
Is there a separate mailing address for the Danbury Probate Court?
No P.O. box is published. Mail goes to the street address: Danbury Probate Court, City Hall Building, 155 Deer Hill Avenue, Danbury, CT 06810.
What does it cost to open a decedent's estate in Danbury?
Connecticut does not charge a filing fee to open a decedent's estate. Under section 6.1 of the Probate Court Rules of Procedure, the statutory filing fee is due at filing in every kind of Probate Court matter except a decedent's estate and an accounting. Instead, the Danbury Probate Court bills the estate later. The fee is set by statute and is the same in all 54 Connecticut probate districts (C.G.S. section 45a-105). For a person who died on or after July 1, 2016, it is graduated on the greater of the inventory, the gross estate or the Connecticut taxable estate, running from $25 up to a cap of $40,000, with a minimum of $150 where a full estate is opened on a basis under $10,000, and with any portion passing to a surviving spouse counted at half (C.G.S. section 45a-107). The fee is owed on everything the decedent owned, including assets that pass outside probate, and it is owed whether or not an estate is opened at all. Interest of 0.5 per cent per month runs on a probate fee that is unpaid thirty days after the court's invoice, and separately on the fee of an estate whose Connecticut estate tax return is filed late (C.G.S. section 45a-107). ctprobate.gov publishes a fee calculator at ctprobate.gov/fees-expenses-calculators.
Are there separate Danbury probate forms?
No. Connecticut probate forms are statewide. The Danbury Probate Court uses the same numbered PC forms as every other Connecticut Probate Court, and the court does not publish forms of its own.
Can I use eFiling for the Danbury Probate Court?
The Connecticut Probate Courts run one statewide eFiling system, powered by TurboCourt. Attorneys who appear in a probate matter must register for it (Probate Court Rules of Procedure, section 22.1). Registration is optional for everyone else, and a self-represented party may open an Individual account and file at the Danbury Probate Court that way. Once you have eFiling access to a matter you must eFile documents in it and receive the court's decrees and notices electronically (section 22.3). The original will can never be eFiled and must reach the court on paper (section 7.1a).
How do I ask to take part in a hearing by electronic means?
Connecticut Probate Courts may allow a party, witness or attorney to take part in a hearing, conference or deposition by electronic means. Section 66.1 of the Probate Court Rules of Procedure lets the court permit it on request or on its own motion, weighing factors that include the nature of the proceeding, the technology available, and whether participation by electronic means would still allow full examination of witnesses. It is a request the court decides, not a right, and the rule names no platform. Ask the clerk of the Danbury Probate Court what that court expects.
How do I look up a Danbury estate online?
Use Connecticut Case Lookup at ctprobate.gov/case-lookup and filter to PD43. Coverage for decedents' estates and trusts runs from January 5, 2011 to the present, and earlier cases may appear but the database is incomplete before that date. The tool shows case index information and fiduciary contact information, not filings.
