The single most common Los Angeles probate mistake is filing the wrong petition before the family understands what is actually in the estate. Under the court's local rules, all probate matters are filed and heard in the Central District at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse, with one exception: North District matters (the Antelope Valley — Lancaster, Palmdale, and surrounding communities) are filed and heard at the Michael D. Antonovich Antelope Valley Courthouse. The SCLAC PRO 010 cover sheet certifies the grounds for the district assignment based on the decedent's residence.

Los Angeles operates a probate examiner system. After a petition is filed, an examiner reviews it for compliance with the Probate Code and local rules and posts notes on the court's free online probate-notes tool — typically several days to about two weeks before the hearing. Each note describes a defect (often the form of notice, missing exhibits, defective verifications, or bond language) that must be cleared by 3:30 PM two court days before the hearing, or the matter is continued, typically by 4 to 8 weeks.

Two probate locations, not one per neighborhood. All Los Angeles County probate is filed and heard at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse downtown, except North District (Antelope Valley) matters, which belong at the Antonovich Courthouse in Lancaster. The SCLAC PRO 010 cover sheet certifies the district assignment from the decedent's residence — confirm the decedent's zip code before filing, because a petition lodged at the wrong district gets transferred or rejected.

Originals are always paper. Original wills and codicils, bonds and undertakings, and hearing exhibits cannot be e-filed even in a mandatory-e-filing case. Lodge them at the courthouse intake counter or by mail.

LACourtConnect is free. Remote appearance for probate runs on LACourtConnect (Microsoft Teams). The old per-appearance fee was eliminated in September 2021, and LACC 3.0 (rolled out to probate in 2024) removed pre-registration — same-day check-in works.

Order certified copies at the hearing. Certified copies of Letters are $25 each and most administrations need 8–10. Ordering them when Letters issue beats returning to Stanley Mosk later, and the cost is reimbursable from the estate.

Plan for security at Stanley Mosk. The Stanley Mosk Courthouse uses metered street parking and nearby public lots, and entry requires security screening. Allow 30 minutes between arrival and your hearing time.
