In an administration, the court or probate registrar sets a claim-filing deadline by order at a date not less than 3 nor more than 4 months from the date of the order, and the first publication must be made within 15 days after that order (Wis. Stat. § 859.01; Wis. Stat. § 859.07(1)).
- Follow the hearing order if the matter is formal or otherwise noticed. For any hearing, use the date and instructions in the court order and ask the Register in Probate about appearance logistics before the hearing date.
- Obtain the authority document after appointment and qualification. Wisconsin uses Domiciliary Letters, form PR-1810, for both informal and formal administration.
- Administer and close the estate. A personal representative must file an inventory within a reasonable time and no later than 6 months after appointment unless the court changes the time (Wis. Stat. § 858.01). Informal administration may close by the personal representative's sworn statement, with appointment terminating 6 months later if no challenge or other proceeding is pending (Wis. Stat. § 865.16(2)). Formal administration closes through final court orders.
