The jurisdiction process
- Choose the correct Michigan probate path before you file. For a full estate, use PC 558 for informal probate and appointment or PC 559 for a formal petition. For assignment of property, use PC 556. Transfer by affidavit under PC 598 is not filed with the Probate Court.

- Give required notices. In an informal probate, the applicant must give written information of the probate within 28 days after informal probate is granted (MCL 700.3306). The personal representative must also handle creditor notice after appointment (MCL 700.3801).
- Watch for court scheduling instructions if a hearing is needed. Presque Isle does not publish estate hearing days or a filing-to-hearing window. For uncontested decedent-estate hearings, videoconferencing is presumed under MCR 5.140 and MCR 2.407 unless the court requires an in-person appearance.
- After appointment, obtain letters of authority on PC 572. Certified copies cost $10.00 for 2026 plus $1.00 per page under MCL 600.2546.
