Before you begin — know the assets and liabilities

Before filing in Presque Isle County, identify the assets, debts, title documents, beneficiary designations and whether any real estate must pass through the estate. The right estate settlement path depends on what is actually in the estate, not only on whether there is a will.

Sunset's 2,300-institution asset discovery helps families find accounts before they choose a Presque Isle filing path, prepare notice information and estimate whether the estate will owe an inventory fee.

Which court handles jurisdiction

Presque Isle County Probate Court is the probate court for estates venued in Presque Isle County. File at the probate register's counter in the Presque Isle County Courthouse in Rogers City, or mail filings to P.O. Box 110, Rogers City, MI 49779.

Presque Isle County includes the cities of Onaway and Rogers City and the townships of Allis, Bearinger, Belknap, Bismarck, Case, Krakow, Metz, Moltke, North Allis, Ocqueoc, Posen, Presque Isle, Pulawski and Rogers. Venue for the first probate proceeding is the county where the decedent was domiciled at death, or, if the decedent was not domiciled in Michigan, a county where the decedent had property (MCL 700.3201).

The jurisdiction process

  1. Choose the correct Michigan probate path before you file. For a full estate, use PC 558 for informal probate and appointment or PC 559 for a formal petition. For assignment of property, use PC 556. Transfer by affidavit under PC 598 is not filed with the Probate Court.
  2. Prepare the statewide SCAO forms and supporting documents. Presque Isle County does not publish a separate estate packet, but its court page links the SCAO probate forms it uses.
  3. File at the Presque Isle County Probate Court counter at 151 East Huron Avenue in Rogers City, or mail the packet to P.O. Box 110, Rogers City, MI 49779. Presque Isle County Probate Court is not on MiFILE.
  4. Pay the opening cost when required. Opening a decedent estate costs $175.00 for 2026 under MCL 600.880 and MCL 600.1986, plus the inventory fee under MCL 600.871. Assignment of property costs $25.00 for 2026 under MCL 600.880, plus the inventory fee.
  5. Give required notices. In an informal probate, the applicant must give written information of the probate within 28 days after informal probate is granted (MCL 700.3306). The personal representative must also handle creditor notice after appointment (MCL 700.3801).
  6. Watch for court scheduling instructions if a hearing is needed. Presque Isle does not publish estate hearing days or a filing-to-hearing window. For uncontested decedent-estate hearings, videoconferencing is presumed under MCR 5.140 and MCR 2.407 unless the court requires an in-person appearance.
  7. After appointment, obtain letters of authority on PC 572. Certified copies cost $10.00 for 2026 plus $1.00 per page under MCL 600.2546.
  8. Administer the estate. File the inventory information within 91 days after letters of authority (MCR 5.307), use the Presque Isle or Judiciary inventory-fee calculator if helpful, protect estate assets and keep interested persons informed.
  9. Close the estate settlement with the correct Michigan closing paper when administration is complete, such as PC 591 for unsupervised administration or the appropriate court order in a formal or supervised matter.
