Uncontested decedent-estate hearings are presumed eligible for videoconferencing under MCR 5.140, but the court may direct a different appearance method under MCR 2.407.
- Receive letters of authority if a personal representative is appointed. The Michigan authority document is PC 572, Letters of Authority for Personal Representative. For 2026, certified copies cost $10.00 plus $1.00 per page under MCL 600.2546.
- Administer and close the estate. The personal representative gathers assets, protects property, gives creditor notice, files inventory information within 91 days of letters of authority under MCR 5.307, pays valid claims and distributes the estate. Unsupervised administration may close by sworn statement no earlier than 5 months after the original appointment if the statutory requirements are met (MCL 700.3954).
